In what must be a first in the history of Rangers FC, two of the club’s prized assets, £10M signing Kevin Kelsy and £8.5M signing Min su Kim, will face off against each other on Friday afternoon when South Korea face Venezuela in a friendly. Both players have seriously impressed during their international breaks, making Kevin Kelsy v Minsu Kim a particularly intriguing Rangers story.
Naturally, Kevin Kelsy is already a regular for Venezuela and has received several call ups for his country. However, the big moment in his most recent outing was his maiden international goal. Admittedly, the match ended in a 2 1 loss, but Kelsy has now finally opened his account for his country and will hope to score many more.
Meanwhile, Min su Kim has been tearing up the international break following his maiden call up to the senior South Korean side. Indeed, numerous viral videos have done the rounds showing his impressive play during these fixtures. Rangers fans have consequently been able to see exactly what the youngster can produce on the international stage.
The problem, sadly, in both cases is that these nations are currently involved in friendlies. These are not meaningful competitive matches and we will have more on that in due course. Nevertheless, the fact remains that the players are performing. You can only play in the matches for which you are selected and against the opponents you face. Both Kevin Kelsy and Minsu Kim have shone very nicely during this international break so far.
The question now is who will perform best when their nations face each other on Friday afternoon? This will be one of huge interest to Rangers fans because it is the first time that assets worth around £20M and owned by Rangers have faced each other on the international stage, certainly in recent seasons.
Rangers, of course, have not been spending that kind of cash on individual players for many years, if ever. Therefore, to have two suddenly facing each other in the same international match is a distinct oddity and something of a novelty.
Both players arrived at Ibrox with significant expectations because of their substantial transfer fees. Now Rangers supporters have the unusual prospect of watching two of the club’s major investments compete directly against each other while representing their respective countries.
We at Ibrox Noise wish both players the best of luck. And, of course, hope they come through the match unscathed. We certainly do not want injuries returning to Ibrox at this point in the season, or indeed at any point.
However, we are sure both will represent Rangers well and we expect a cracking match between two sides who will utterly go for it. Kevin Kelsy and Min su Kim facing each other on the international stage is certainly one to watch.
