West Ham Face Major Defensive Blow Before QPR Clash: Should Nuno Risk His Overworked Star?

West Ham face an awkward selection decision ahead of their Championship meeting with QPR, with several first-team players returning from demanding international commitments. However, the biggest concern surrounds Dinos Mavropanos, whose workload could become a problem for Nuno during an important period of the season.

West Ham face a defensive headache before QPR

According to Claret & Hugh, the Greek defender has accumulated significant minutes during the international break. His latest involvement came against the Netherlands, where Greece surrendered a two-goal advantage to draw 2-2. The result reportedly brought back unpleasant memories of West Ham’s previous campaign.

There is another demanding assignment awaiting Mavropanos, with Greece scheduled to face Germany on Sunday evening. Consequently, he could complete four full international appearances before returning to club duty.

That’s a considerable workload for a defender who has become central to West Ham‘s plans. His importance increased after the club failed to secure a replacement for Axel Disasi, leaving Nuno with limited senior alternatives at centre-back.

Mavropanos has delivered important performances throughout the campaign, contributing defensively while establishing himself as one of the team’s leading figures. His attacking contribution has been equally valuable, with the Greek international sharing the club’s leading goalscorer position.

Manor Solomon presents another fitness concern after collecting substantial minutes for his national side. West Ham have Edvin Austbø available as an alternative, although replacing Mavropanos would present a considerably bigger challenge.

Goalkeeper Mads Hermansen has experienced international disappointment himself. Denmark suffered a 4-2 defeat against Portugal despite his involvement for the entire match.

Should West Ham rest Mavropanos against QPR?

Nuno should start Mavropanos against QPR, provided the medical department clears him following a proper assessment of his workload. Resting him automatically would create another selection problem when West Ham need their defensive leaders available.

His performances against international opposition, including 17 defensive contributions against the Netherlands, demonstrate his involvement and importance. However, those numbers don’t remove the possibility of fatigue after consecutive full matches.

West Ham face an 18-game run before the end of the year, leaving Nuno with limited opportunities for extended rotation. One injury to Mavropanos could cause considerably more damage than managing his minutes during a home fixture against QPR.

I’d expect Nuno to start him, monitor his physical condition carefully and consider an early substitution if West Ham establish a comfortable advantage. There is little sense in demanding another 90 minutes unnecessarily.

The bigger concern is squad planning. West Ham need another experienced centre-back in January because relying on Mavropanos throughout such a demanding schedule poses obvious risks. QPR, however, isn’t the match where Nuno should automatically sacrifice his defensive leader.
