Former Sunderland and Hartlepool United defender Kenton Richardson has left Gateshead after his contract expired.

Sunderland Echo understands he held positive talks with new boss Lee Cattermole before accepting an offer to join Rob Elliot at Carlisle United.

The Durham-born full-back came through Hartlepool’s academy, made 50 senior appearances, then joined Sunderland in summer 2020, featuring three times in the Papa John’s Trophy before a permanent switch to Gateshead after their National League North title.

Richardson helped the Heed reach back-to-back FA Trophy finals, lifting the cup in 2024 on penalties against FC Halifax Town, and reached the FA Cup proper in three of his four seasons.

New terms were offered but, as his deal neared its end, he chose a new opportunity elsewhere, ending a four-year stay at the International Stadium.

In a farewell message, he thanked players, staff, supporters and volunteers, recalled Wembley memories, captaining the side and missing the 2024 play-offs, and said it felt the right time to move on.

The squad return to pre-season on Wednesday, with a first friendly at Blyth Town next Tuesday, and Gateshead plan further additions in the coming weeks.
