Gateshead have confirmed defender Kenton Richardson has left following the expiry of his contract, ending a four-year spell at the International Stadium. He said it was the right time to move on.

Sunderland Echo understands that new manager Lee Cattermole held positive talks after his appointment two weeks ago, but Richardson has accepted an offer from Carlisle United to link up with former Gateshead boss Rob Elliot.

A Hartlepool academy graduate, he made 50 senior appearances before joining Sunderland in summer 2020 and featured three times in the Papa John’s Trophy. Loans at Notts County and Spennymoor Town preceded a permanent move to Gateshead after their National League North title.

Richardson helped the Heed reach back-to-back FA Trophy finals and win the competition for the first time in 2024, beating FC Halifax Town on penalties. He also reached the FA Cup proper rounds in three of his four seasons.

After last season’s survival push, Gateshead sought to keep key players but could not agree new terms with Richardson. Fresh terms for 2026/27 were offered, and he opted for a new opportunity elsewhere.

In a farewell message, he highlighted Wembley trips, lifting the FA Trophy and captaining the side, and reflected on what might have been without the 2024 play-off exclusion. He thanked team-mates, staff and supporters, and wished the club well.
