The club said in a statement on Saturday that Kevin Kampl will terminate his RB Leipzig contract, the Slovenia international seeking more time with family after his brother’s death.

Affected by the sudden passing of his brother Seki, 51, in October, the 35-year-old will leave after the home game against Bayern Munich on 17 January. He joined Leipzig in 2017.

Kampl has not featured since then and will return to his hometown of Solingen.

He is Leipzig’s sixth most-capped player with 283 appearances. His contract had been due to run until next summer.

He made three full appearances this season, the latest on matchday 5, a 1-0 win over Wolfsburg. Kampl said he does not completely rule out playing again one day, though it feels unrealistic for now.
