Rangers’ search for a new head coach has gathered pace, with Kevin Muscat emerging as the leading contender to succeed Russell Martin, who was dismissed earlier this month after just 123 days in charge, according to reports by Sky Sports.

Muscat, currently managing Shanghai Port in the Chinese Super League, is said to have impressed the Rangers hierarchy during preliminary discussions. The 52-year-old, who played for Rangers during their 2002/03 treble-winning campaign, has developed a strong managerial résumé with title-winning stints in Australia, Japan, and now China. His Shanghai Port side sit top of the table with four games remaining, and while his commitment to their title run may delay any immediate move, the club is reportedly open to further dialogue.

Danny Rohl being considered

Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Röhl is also firmly in contention, having held positive talks with Rangers officials. Röhl, just 36, earned widespread respect for steering Wednesday to mid-table stability in the Championship after inheriting a struggling side. With previous experience at RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, and the Germany national team, his credentials appeal to the club’s desire for a progressive, tactically astute coach.

Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard, who rejected an approach last week, remains out of the running despite renewed speculation from bookmakers.

Rangers, currently eighth in the Scottish Premiership, are being overseen by Steven Smith and the club’s B team staff while the managerial search continues. An interim appointment, potentially former winger Neil McCann, has not been ruled out should Muscat’s arrival be delayed.

With Saturday’s clash against Dundee United looming, the Ibrox board face mounting pressure to restore direction and stability to a club still reeling from another short-lived managerial reign.
