Kevin Nagle and Martin Drury face an obvious transfer task involving Cam Humphreys and Ipswich Town in the near future for Huddersfield Town...

Kevin Nagle, Huddersfield Town and Ipswich Town could have a fascinating transfer decision to make over Cameron Humphreys in the coming months.

The Ipswich Town midfielder has already shown what he can offer on loan at the John Smith's Stadium, having impressed in League One already after arriving on loan in January, and he is now back with the Terriers for another season in 2026/27 and seen as a key player.

With Martin Drury having worked with him closely last term and Cam Humphreys continuing to develop, Huddersfield Town have a player they know can contribute immediately. The question is whether they can turn that loan arrangement into something permanent.

Humphreys joined Huddersfield on loan in January and quickly established himself as an important part of the side, helping them finish the 2025/26 campaign strongly, albeit short of promotion.

His performances were enough to have Huddersfield eyeing another move for Humphreys to return to West Yorkshire this season, with Drury having had the opportunity to work with him firsthand after taking over as caretaker manager in March.

That was always going to strengthen Huddersfield's desire to keep him. Drury knows exactly what Humphreys can bring, while Kevin Nagle has an obvious opportunity to secure a player who could become an important part of the club's future in the long-term, too.

Whether that means making enquiries in January 2027 or waiting until next summer, a permanent move should surely be on the agenda after his start to life this season so far.

Humphreys turns 23 later this month and, with his opportunities at Ipswich increasingly limited, Huddersfield could offer him the stability he needs and a long-term future.

Even if Nagle and Drury cannot end the club's three-year stay in League One this season, Humphreys should still be viewed as a player worth building around in whatever division they end up in next August.

Cam Humphreys has already proved himself at Ipswich, Wycombe and Huddersfield

Humphreys broke through under Kieran McKenna during Ipswich's final two League One campaigns, winning both the academy Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards.

He was even more impressive during the following promotion season, contributing goals in limited minutes as Ipswich reached the Championship, although opportunities became harder to find after that.

A loan to Wycombe Wanderers in 2024/25 proved to be hugely beneficial, with Humphreys thriving and being named their Player of the Season. He returned to Ipswich after their relegation but still struggled to establish himself, eventually joining Huddersfield in January.

His return to the Terriers has already shown he is more than capable at League One level, and his early 2026/27 performances suggest he can play a major role in another promotion push. Huddersfield should therefore be looking at the bigger picture.

The exciting thing about Humphreys is that there should still be plenty more to come. If he is already an extremely capable League One midfielder before turning 23, there is every reason to believe his best years will come at a higher level.

His prime years are on the horizon and they should be spent playing Championship football rather than moving between temporary homes, meaning finding a permanent club before he turns 24 could be hugely important for his development.

It is a shame from Ipswich's perspective if they cannot find a way to keep and develop one of their own academy graduates, particularly after the impact he had during their rise under McKenna. But that could be Huddersfield's gain.

Nagle and Drury have already seen Humphreys up close and know what he can offer. If they can provide him with the stability he needs, they could end up benefiting enormously from Ipswich's inability to give him a long-term pathway.
