Kevin Phillips has urged Wrexham to match Sunderland’s asking price for goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, arguing that a buyer is likely to pay it.

“I think someone will pay what Sunderland are after. And ultimately, of course, to us, it's a lot of money, but in reality, is it? I don't think it is.” He was speaking to Sunderland Echo.

Patterson played a pivotal part in Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League last year. In pre-season he was displaced as Regis Le Bris’ first choice by Dutch international Robin Roefs, then joined Millwall on loan in January.

A permanent move has been discussed in recent weeks, with Wolves and Wrexham linked alongside Millwall. Sunderland are understood to value him at around £eight million to £10 million.

“You know, you're getting an excellent keeper that's got good experience in the Championship. And for me, if you don't do it early, someone will come in and buy him, and they might regret it.

“So, ultimately every club plays hardball. They'll all say, ‘We don't want to pay that’. But ultimately, in the background, things are probably getting worked on. And it probably will end up happening at some point. He's a good goalkeeper; if I was Wrexham, I'd get it done, to be honest.”
