Kevin Phillips believes Dan Neil could excel for a leading Scottish Premiership side following his departure from Sunderland this summer.

According to Sunderland Echo, the 24-year-old is a free agent after the Black Cats published their retained list on Wednesday morning, and Rangers have been repeatedly linked with the midfielder.

Phillips said he has seen enough of Neil to be confident he could play for Rangers or Celtic, describing him as technically strong, box to box, energetic, comfortable on the ball and capable of scoring.

He added that at a club which tends to dominate possession and chances each week, Neil would fit in without issue.

Neil made three Premier League appearances for Sunderland last season before joining Ipswich Town on loan for the second half of the campaign, helping them secure promotion to the top flight.
