On Friday, a couple of days before the start of the 2026 Major League Soccer season, New York City FC announced that the team has signed Kevin Pierre to a one-year contract, with options through the 2028-2029 season. The midfielder was originally a SuperDraft pick from Georgia Southern University, picked in the second round, and clearly did enough in the preseason to earn a contract.
Additionally, it is another safe contract for a rookie. Some of the SuperDraft picks over the last few years that signed have not always worked out, with Nico Cavallo being the lone exception. Still, even he plays very little compared to some of the other younger players that were signed via transfers or as Homegrown players.
Nevertheless, based on his collegiate career, Pierre appears to be a consistent and reliable player, which is something NYCFC needs. Sporting Director Todd Dunivant also added this when speaking about why the club signed him: "Kevin has impressed from day one in preseason and earned the respect of his teammates and coaches,” he told newyorkcityfc.com. “We believe he has the tools to further bolster our midfield, and we’re pleased to welcome Kevin to New York City FC.”
Whether Pierre can make a difference in the midfield is questionable. However, sometimes draft picks can be successful, as seen most recently with Kevin O'Toole. Plus, even if he does not see the pitch often in his first season, the midfielder could be impactful in training and develop behind the scenes. The club could always loan him out, especially with NYCFC II.
Moreover, if Pierre can break into the first team and earn minutes, then that will give Head Coach Pascal Jansen another option off the bench. In other words, the player has potential and could be utilized in different ways. And, if he does not work out, then the team does not have to renew his option at the end of the year.
It must be said, though, that this was not the news that fans wanted to hear. NYCFC desperately needs a striker, especially because it would not be a good idea for Talles Magno to try playing as the number nine again.
Of course, it is better that NYCFC did not sign a striker from college, for they need someone who is an established center-forward. But Pierre is someone to watch, for the player could be one of those rare draft signings who find success.
