Lazio head coach Gennaro Gattuso won’t be able to count on Nicolo Rovella before next month’s big clash against Juventus.

The 24-year-old missed the bulk of the previous campaign with two serious injuries, so he’s been eager to reestablish himself as a protagonist at the heart of the lineup. But unfortunately for the Segrate native, he picked up a knock on the second matchday of the season against his original club, Genoa.

Nicolo Rovella Recovering From Calf Injury

After a month on the sidelines, Rovella underwent an MRI on Friday. According to Il Messaggero (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the results were largely positive, as the swelling around the damaged area has significantly decreased. That being said, the midfielder won’t be available to Gattuso immediately.

Rovella Will Be Back for Juventus vs Lazio

The Italian Regista won’t take part in Lazio’s two international break friendlies against Arezzo and Juve Stabia. He also isn’t expected to return for the Aquile’s Serie A home fixture against Monza on October 11. On the contrary, Rovella should be back on October 18 when Gattuso’s men travel to Turin for the big showdown against his former club, Juventus.

The Italian international only made three competitive appearances for the Bianconeri before joining Lazio in the summer of 2023. He initially signed on a two-year loan, but he was always expected to finalise a permanent transfer in 2025 due to an obligation to buy.

Lazio’s Regista Options

In Rovella’s absence, Gattuso will continue to rely on Reda Belahyane, who has been performing admirably in the holding-midfielder role. Danilo Cataldi is also back in action after recovering from groin surgery, thus offering the manager an option behind the 22-year-old Moroccan.
