Kaizer Chiefs striker Khanyisa Mayo has opened up on the competition for a starting berth as he continues to struggle for goals.
The 27-year-old signed for the Glamour Boys on a season-long loan with an option to buy from Algerian giants CR Belouizdad at the beginning of the season.
Mayo scored on his debut in a league clash against Marumo Gallants in September 2025 - his only goal in 12 appearances, and he has attributed his low return to fierce competition in the frontline.
“There's six different strikers that I'm competing with and they've been doing well for the club, and every time I'm called upon to try my best and help the team get a positive result [I give my all],” he said.
"I've managed to come into games where I've made an impact, I've managed to come into games where I didn't make an impact, but that's football for you and for it's for me to be happy for the person that's playing ahead of me and when it's my time to shine he has to be happy for me when I'm shining.
The former Cape Town City talisman dismissed suggestions that being on-loan and seeking a permanent contract at Naturena is an added pressure on his shoulders.
“Not to say it gives me that kind of pressure - the pressure has been there. I've been born into a family of pressure, the pressure has been there, playing for a big institution like Kaizer Chiefs, the pressure is there,” Mayo added.
"So, I don't think it's something that I can't handle but as time goes by and the chances come in, when I get my chance eventually it will be time to make my move to say I can make it permanent.
The son of former Chiefs midfield general Patrick Mayo - the Amakhosi forward will be eager to walk in his father's footsteps when his team lock horns with Orlando Pirates in the Soweto derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
