Joshua Kimmich was full of praise for Bayern Munich’s performance following their commanding 6-1 victory over Atalanta in the Champions League. Speaking after the match, the Bayern midfielder highlighted his team’s attacking dominance and the way Vincent Kompany’s side controlled the game from start to finish.
“Unfortunately we conceded that goal at the end, but otherwise it was a very strong performance from us,” Kimmich said. “We created a lot of attacks and had a lot of dominance throughout the game.”
Bayern raced into a three-goal lead in the first half before continuing their offensive display after the break, ultimately scoring six times against the Italian side. Kimmich particularly praised the atmosphere inside the stadium and the reaction of the Atalanta supporters despite their team’s heavy defeat.
“The way we won was very impressive,” he said. “The atmosphere here was great. The fans were still cheering even after conceding six goals – that’s rare and really impressive. But despite that atmosphere, we managed to focus on our own game.”
According to the German international, Bayern already felt confident about the result at half-time but were determined to maintain their intensity. “At half-time we already knew we were in a good position to get a strong result, but we wanted to make it even better - and we managed to do that.”
Despite the convincing victory, Kimmich also expressed concern over the injuries Bayern suffered during the match. “We hope the injuries aren’t too serious,” he said. “Last season injuries cost us a lot, and this season we want to finish strongly.”
Kimmich also addressed the yellow card he received late in the match, admitting the booking was frustrating. “It was unnecessary,” he said. “I was looking for a passing option and wanted to play the ball out. The yellow card is annoying.”
If he is truthful about his comments on his yellow card is up to us to decide - but he won't mind to miss the second leg against Atalanta in order to play in the Quarter final, that's for sure.
