Speaking at his pre-match presser, Schalke 04 head coach Christian Gross confirmed interest in signing Ajax striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar but that nothing is official.
“Of course, nothing is fixed yet,” said Gross. “But there is mutual interest. If a player with experience, aura, personality and quality would come back to us again, it would be fantastic for us. Yesterday’s game in Holland shows that he still has finishing skills. He’s a personality who would do us good. I’ve been in contact with him but it will be a day or two before the decision is made.”
The 37-year-old came off the Ajax bench in the 89th minute on Thursday evening to score two goals which resulted in a 3-1 win against FC Twente. Speaking after the game, Huntelaar confirmed Schalke’s interest.
“I’ve talked about it with Ajax but it’s a difficult choice for me,” said the Dutchman. “I have played for Ajax for a long time, 6.5 years and I played at Schalke for seven. So they are the two clubs that I like the most.
“Schalke is in more trouble, they need me more, so that is more of a feeling choice. I’m going to sleep on it.”
