Klopp appointed Germany head coach on deal until 2030

Germany have appointed Jurgen Klopp as their new head coach, on a four-year contract running through to 2030. He returns to management after leaving Liverpool in 2024, when he said he was “running out of energy.”

Klopp won six trophies in nine years at Anfield. Since then, he had been working as Red Bull’s global head of football, overseeing the company’s network of clubs worldwide.

The DFB will not pay Red Bull a compensation fee to release him. Instead, they will donate €1m to Wings for Life, a charity backed by the drinks company.

Klopp succeeds Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down after Germany’s exit at the World Cup. Paraguay knocked them out on penalties in the last 32, extending a run of poor tournaments stretching back to 2018.

He inherits a side still chasing a first major trophy since winning the World Cup in 2014. Klopp made his name at Mainz, then won back-to-back Bundesliga titles with Borussia Dortmund.

His time at Liverpool brought the Premier League, the Champions League and the FA Cup among his six trophies there. He arrives with a reputation as one of the most decorated coaches of his generation.

Klopp’s first match in charge comes against the Netherlands in the Nations League on 24 September. Germany then face Greece three days later.
