Jürgen Klopp has condemned FIFA for overturning Folarin Balogun’s suspension, criticising Gianni Infantino and Donald Trump before the United States’ World Cup last-16 meeting with Belgium.

Balogun was sent off in the USA’s 2-0 round of 32 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina and was expected to miss Belgium. FIFA announced on Sunday that the ban had been lifted. According to The Athletic, Trump phoned Infantino to have the ban lifted.

The decision was welcomed by Trump, while Belgium said they were astonished and were investigating all potential options. Neither FIFA nor the White House has commented.

Speaking as a MagentaTV pundit, Klopp said football belongs to the game’s people, not to politicians or administrators, and argued that if Trump and Infantino did agree the change it was crazy. He said the episode called everything into question and that neither man should be involved in such matters.

Klopp added he could not fathom the overturn because, in his view, the red-card incident left no room for debate. Even had the original decision been wrong, he said, the sport learns to live with officiating mistakes.

Now Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer, the former Liverpool manager is the leading candidate to replace the recently dismissed Julian Nagelsmann as Germany’s head coach.
