When announcing his Germany squad for the current international break, Jürgen Klopp called up 44 players and split them into two groups for two matches each.
Ultimately, Klopp allowed a handful of players from the squad that drew 1-1 with the Netherlands and lost 1-0 to Greece to remain with the team for the remaining fixtures.
Captain Joshua Kimmich, however, was not among them and was sent home from the national team camp, despite wanting to stay.
“He actually asked a few times, but I can tell Jo this: the more often you ask, the less likely you are to get what you want,” Klopp revealed in an interview with BR24.
Kimmich faced significant criticism for his performance against Greece, but Klopp insisted he was happy with his captain.
“He made a great impression. He’s a great captain. Everything was good,” he said.
“We wanted to make this cut, and I also want to see these guys when the established players aren’t there.
“I need to see that, too. There could be injuries in the future, or other things could happen.”
Klopp stressed that the decision was “not against anyone in particular.”
“We simply have to be prepared for every eventuality, and we want to give everyone the platform they deserve,” the Germany boss emphasised.
“So the Kimmich family is on a family holiday now. To be honest, I hope he actually takes it as one.”
After bearing Serbia 2-0 on Thursday, Germany face Greece on Sunday in their final game of the international break.
