Germany coach Jürgen Klopp sent captain Joshua Kimmich home after the 1-0 defeat to Greece, sticking to a planned squad reshuffle. He had named 44 players for this break, split into two groups for two matches each.

“He actually asked a few times, but I can tell Jo this: the more often you ask, the less likely you are to get what you want,” he told BR24.

A handful from the squads that drew 1-1 with the Netherlands and lost 1-0 to Greece stayed on, but Kimmich did not. “He made a great impression. He’s a great captain. Everything was good,” Klopp said.

“We wanted to make this cut, and I also want to see these guys when the established players aren’t there. I need to see that, too. There could be injuries in the future, or other things could happen.”

He stressed the decision was “not against anyone in particular”. “We simply have to be prepared for every eventuality, and we want to give everyone the platform they deserve.”

“So the Kimmich family is on a family holiday now. To be honest, I hope he actually takes it as one.”
