Kompany demands “same ambition” from Bayern squad ahead of upcoming season | OneFootball

Winning a domestic double and rewriting parts of the record books last season has done little to change Vincent Kompany’s mindset. Despite leading Bayern Munich to Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal glory, the Belgian insists his side must approach the new season with the same hunger and determination that drove their success.

With Bayern currently in Hong Kong as part of their Audi Summer Tour, Kompany has been greeted by thousands of enthusiastic supporters while balancing public training sessions, commercial commitments and preparations for Saturday’s friendly against Aston Villa. Even amid the tour, his attention is firmly fixed on the challenges that lie ahead.

Speaking at a sponsor event in Hong Kong, the 40-year-old stressed that maintaining the mentality that fuelled last season’s achievements is more important than anything else.

“It’s not just about improvement, but I think we still need to have the same ambition we showed on day one. That hasn’t changed,” Kompany explained. 

The Bayern boss made it clear that last season’s Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal triumphs should not lead to any sense of complacency within the squad.

“We have to want to improve, that applies to our top players as well as everyone else on the team. And we have to want to win more titles and more games.”

For Kompany, sustaining success is not simply about technical ability or individual talent, but about preserving the mindset that has brought Bayern to the top.

“It’s more about mentality than quality, and that mentality must remain the same.”

Bayern will conclude their tour of Asia with a meeting against Premier League outfit Aston Villa on Saturday before returning to Germany, where they will host RB Leipzig at the Allianz Arena in their final friendly before the competitive season begins.
