Following Tuesday’s 2–1 Champions League quarter-final win over Real Madrid, and with an eye on the return leg on Wednesday, Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany is expected to rotate his side for Saturday’s Bundesliga match against FC St. Pauli.
But how many changes will he make? Speaking at a press conference on Friday, the Belgian coach said he didn't know yet and would make the decision after the final training session.
“Honestly, I don’t know yet – I need the latest information from training on how the boys feel. I would like to have a team who are just as challenged as the one against Real – who have the same concentration, motivation and intensity as Real. That's normally never a problem for us. I want to see how fresh the players are so they are just as energised against St. Pauli as they were against Real. If we make changes, we don't want to lose what we've done so far," said Kompany, who turns 40 years old today.
He added that any rotation would be fully in line with his approach so far this season.
“We have to look at what we've done this season: We're only at this point on 10 April because the whole team has been involved. If we make one or two changes, it's only what we've been doing all season. In November or October, you could have asked whether it was right or not. But when we've come this far, you can't ask that anymore,” he said.
"We're not going to change anything at St. Pauli. The competition in the squad is also fierce. I'm familiar with that from my playing career, I appreciate that we're raising our level. I don't know who will play yet, I'll be thinking about that tonight."
One starter against Real who is likely to keep his place is goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
"We'll decide who'll be in goal today. If Manu doesn't feel any problems, he'll continue, he has to stay in the flow. But if there is a problem, we'll always make a sensible decision; we have a great talent in Jonas Urbig."
Kompany also gave an update on Harry Kane during the press conference. Click here to see what he said about the 32-year-old forward.
