Key midfielder will be missing for return leg at Allianz Arena
Aurelien Tchouameni will be sidelined for Real Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich next week.
The French international was cautioned during Madrid’s 2-1 defeat in the first leg against the Bundesliga champions on Tuesday.
He was booked in the 37th minute at the Santiago Bernabeu for a pull on his compatriot Michael Olise, who starred off the right flank as Vincent Kompany’s visitors left the Spanish capital with a big victory to protect in the reverse fixture next Wednesday.
Tchouameni’s yellow card means that he will now be suspended for Real’s trip to the Allianz Arena, where they are a goal down on aggregate after Kylian Mbappe halved their two-goal deficit.
Luis Diaz had opened the scoring for Bayern four minutes before the break, as he slotted home past Andriy Lunin after neat interplay on the edge of the box between Harry Kane and Serge Gnabry.
Kane, the former Tottenham striker, had his goal just 22 seconds into the second half as he stroked home from just outside the D following a positive dart by Olise into dangerous territory.
Mbappe scored with 74 minutes on the clock after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s delicious cross from the right flank, and Mbappe ghosted in around the back to tap home, despite Manuel Neuer’s best efforts to claw it out.
As such, Alvaro Arbeloa’s Real head to Bavaria with a one-goal deficit to try and overturn, but they will have to do it without their reliable midfielder Tchouameni.
In the Frenchman’s place, Arbeloa could turn to Jude Bellingham, who was surprisingly benched while teenager Thiago Pitarch started.
The England international replaced Pitarch just after the hour as the hosts chased the game.
Arbeloa could also pick Tchouameni’s French colleague Eduardo Camavinga, who has sparked recent reported transfer interest, or former Arsenal loanee Dani Ceballos.
