Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate wants his future settled before the World Cup begins in June as the contract dispute with the club drags on.
According to French news publication L’Equipe, Konate is likely to remain at Liverpool beyond this summer as he is leaning towards a contract extension.
Konate is on course to become a free agent in less than three months, and several European clubs are already keeping an eye on his situation.
Having already lost Trent Alexander-Arnold in a similar scenario, Liverpool are keen to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself. But they’re no closer to negotiating a new deal yet.
If they fail to do so in the coming months, Konate will become one of the most valuable free agents available in the transfer market this summer.
Liverpool have made it clear they want to keep Konate, but their contract proposal is heavily dependent on his performances.
However, Konate has established himself as a key player for the Reds and wants his importance to the team reflected in any new deal.
Both sides have been at it for months, but they’re not close to an agreement yet, even though Konate wants to remain at Anfield.
The 26-year-old has now made it clear that he wants his future to be sorted before jetting off to the World Cup with the rest of the French squad.
Konate has already been linked with a couple of high-profile clubs, with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain among those reportedly monitoring his situation.
Madrid had already prioritised a move for Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano, but could reconsider their stance on Konate after his compatriot signed a new deal.
PSG wouldn’t want to pass on the chance to bring Konate back to France either, setting the stage for an interesting transfer tussle if Liverpool fail to reach an agreement with him.
