Joan Garcia’s first senior Spain call-up was always going to be a special moment, but FC Barcelona team-mate Lamine Yamal made sure it also began with a smile. As the Barca goalkeeper arrived at Las Rozas for his first camp with the senior national team, Lamine was already waiting for him and immediately turned the moment into a light-hearted one.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Joan reported to Spain camp on Sunday night after his excellent display against Rayo Vallecano, which had only strengthened the feeling that his maiden call-up was fully deserved. It is his first ever senior call-up.
He arrived alongside fellow Barcelona players Dani Olmo, Pau Cubarsi and Fermin Lopez, while Lamine had reached the camp earlier. That is where the fun began. Lamine greeted him with the words: “Hey Joan, you’re here…”, a teasing line that made everyone around them laugh, including Joan himself.
Joan may be the newcomer in the senior Spain setup, yet having so many Barca team-mates around him clearly helps make the transition easier. Barcelona are the club with the most representatives in this Spain squad, providing seven players in the 27-man group.
While the 24-year-old is unlikely to be handed his debut unless Luis de la Fuente decides to surprise everyone, its a clear indication that even the Spanish manager is struggling to keep the impressive goalkeeper out of the scheme of things.
It is never going to be easy to break a hierarchy of Unai Simon, David Raya and Alex Remiro but if there is one goalkeeper who can do that, it has to be Joan. He makes the impossible look routine and let’s wait and see if he is handed his senior debut in the coming weeks.
