Robert Mouynet, the last surviving member of France’s 1958 World Cup team, has died aged 96.
According to L'Équipe, he died on Wednesday at his daughter’s home in Toulouse, having been interviewed by the paper in the spring, alongside his family, to recall that Swedish summer. He was little known, perhaps because he never won a full cap for France.
The 1958 tournament was the peak of a fine professional career that brought 408 matches between 1949 and 1963 with Toulouse, Cannes and Lyon. He spent eight seasons with Toulouse.
A former France B international and serviceman, Mouynet played two warm-up games with the Bleus early in 1958. He faced Limoges in January, a 3-2 win, then Rennes a month later, a 4-1 victory.
France finished third at the World Cup in Sweden in 1958, capturing the hearts of the nation.
