Manchester United were denied their first Women’s Super League victory of the season as Smilla Smilla Holmberg struck in stoppage time to rescue a 1-1 draw for Arsenal.

The visitors produced a much-improved performance after defeats by London City Lionesses and Chelsea, defending with discipline and looking dangerous on the counter.

Elisabeth Terland twice tested Misa Rodriguez in the opening half, while  Phallon Tullis-Joyce was equally impressive at the other end, producing an outstanding save to keep out Stina Blackstenius’ header.

United eventually broke the deadlock after the interval. Georgia Stanway’s under-hit pass was intercepted by Julia Zigiotti, who raced forward, skipped past Steph Catley and fired a low finish underneath Rodriguez.

Arsenal responded with sustained pressure, but Tullis-Joyce continued to frustrate the hosts, denying Caitlin Foord, Selina Cerci and Chloe Kelly as United looked set to hold on.

However, their resistance finally ended with just 90 seconds of normal time remaining. Leah Williamson’s cross found Holmberg, who smashed a volley into the roof of the net.

The result leaves Arsenal unbeaten in 20 WSL matches, while United remain without a league win under Eva Olid.
