This summer, some clubs enjoyed exciting transfer campaigns, especially those who ply their trade in the Premier League, while others had a lukewarm Mercato, which is often the case for Italy’s top-flight sides. However, Lazio distinguished themselves from all others, as they didn’t even have a market to begin with.

Sadly for Maurizio Sarri, his enchanting return to Formello was swiftly blemished by a transfer ban imposed by COVISOC, as the club’s most recent financial report failed to meet the required standards.

Therefore, Lazio were prevented from making any new signings, and consequently, the management decided to lock down all key players. Nevertheless, the club did conduct minor operations. Hence, while the current squad is very similar to Marco Baroni’s team from last season, it is not completely identical.

So let’s take a look back on all the market activities that ensued this summer at Lazio, little as it is.

Nicolo Rovella & Four Others Lazio Players Complete Permanent Switches

While Lazio weren’t able to make new signings, the arrangements made in the past were withheld, so they managed to tie down five players who were previously on loan. The most important was arguably Nicolo Rovella, who arrived from Juventus on a two-year loan deal. The midfielder completed a transfer worth €17 million, and the same goes for Luca Pellegrini (€4 million).

Moreover, Lazio exercised their option to buy Nuno Tavares from Arsenal for €5 million, while Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Samuel Gigot completed their moves from Hatayspor and Olympique Marseille, respectively.

Danilo Cataldi & Matteo Cancellieri Return

Fiorentina and Parma opted against buying Danilo Cataldi and Matteo Cancellieri, much to Sarri’s delight. The 66-year-old was happy to welcome back the midfielder who was an integral part of his plans in the past. As for the young winger, he was the club’s standout performer in pre-season, earning himself a starting spot, at least in Gustav Isaksen’s absence.

Lazio only sold one first-team player from last season, as they allowed Loum Tchaouna to join Burnley for €15 million, thus registering a capital gain. The French winger had an underwhelming year at the Stadio Olimpico after making the move from Salernitana last summer. Therefore, his departure was hardly contested by the club’s supporters.

On the contrary, the Romano Floriani Mussolini saga didn’t sit well with the fans. Lazio exercised their option to buy back their academy product from Juve Stabia, only to later sell him to Cremonese.

These disgruntled voices grew louder following the 22-year-old’s impactful cameo against Sassuolo, as the fans cannot wrap their head around the club’s decision to sell a young and promising right-back, while maintaining the ageing Manuel Lazzari, Adam Marusic and Elseid Hysaj.

Other Departures

Nicolo Casale sealed a permanent transfer to Bologna after spending the previous campaign on loan at the Renato Dall’Ara. Gaetano Castrovilli has been released following his loan spell at Monza, and he ended up signing for Bari. Jean Daniel Akpa Akrpo and Andre Anderson saw out their contracts and are now free agents.

Young defender Fabio Andrea Ruggeri also completed a free transfer to Carrara, while Arijon Ibrahimov returned to Bayern Munich after a forgettable loan spell in the Italian capital

Potential Deals in the Coming Days

Although the transfer market has closed in the majority of the European nations, Turkish, Greek and Arabic clubs remain active, so they’ll be able to poach more signings in the coming days and weeks. This could spell good news for Lazio, as some of the club’s outcasts might end up sealing late transfers, the likes of Gigot, Toma Basic, Mohamed Fares and Dimitrije Kamenovic.
