Lazio Considering Deadline-Day Move for Nigerian Winger | OneFootball

Lazio have reportedly enquired about the availability of FC Basel winger Philip Otele in what is shaping up to be a hectic deadline day.

The 27-year-old was born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, but launched his playing career in England, particularly at the academies of Teesside and Wolviston. He then embarked on various stints around the world, playing in Lithuania, Romania, and the UAE, before moving to Basel in January 2025.

Last season, the Nigerian winger made 32 appearances for the Swiss champions across all competitions, contributing with nine goals and four assists. In January, he joined Hamburg on loan and went on to feature in nine Bundesliga games, scoring a goal and providing an assist. He also made his senior debut for the Nigerian national team earlier this year, and thus far earned five caps.

Lazio Enquire About Otele

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Otele is one of the names Lazio are working on in the final day of the summer transfer window. The Biancocelesti have contacted Basel to enquire about the player’s availability, so further updates are expected during the day.

Otele has occupied various roles throughout his career, but the right-footed player is most comfortable playing as an inverted left winger.

Hence, even with Matteo Cancellieri staying, there could be room for the Super Eagles international at Lazio, as Mattia Zaccagni currently lacks a natural understudy beyond the versatile Tijjani Noslin. Transfermarkt estimates the player’s value at €4 million. His contract with Basel runs until June 2028.
