Lazio left-back Nuno Tavares joined his coach Marco Baroni for the pre-match press conference ahead of Thursday’s major Europa League showdown against Porto.

The 24-year-old has been on sensational form since the start of the season, garnering eight assists in as many Serie A appearances. But after serving a one-match ban against Cagliari, he’ll be set to start in Europe for the first time in Biancocelesti colors.

Exciting Contest vs Porto

The former Sporting and Benfica man is all-too-familiar with Porto, so he expects an open contest unlike some of Lazio’s encounters against smaller Serie A sides, as reported by La Lazio Siamo Noi.

It won’t be a defensive match for. We are a compact team and we are confident with ourselves. I think it is difficult to play against teams that are not fighting for the title as they tend to close down the spaces. But those who aim for the highest places always want to win and when they meet each other, they leave more spaces. We saw it in the Champions League clash between Real Madrid and Milan. The important thing for us is to keep our feet on the ground and remain humble.

Nuno Tavares Grateful for Lazio Teammates

Tavares credits his Lazio teammates for this thrilling form, while explaining that breaking into the national team is an objective, but not an obsession.

Our fantastic and top-quality group made it easy for me to adjust at the club. They believe in me as I believe in them. Without the team and the staff, my stats wouldn’t be the same. I do think about the national team, but it’s not a constant thought. I’m playing at a big club with continuity. If it happens, I’ll be glad, but if it doesn’t, I’ll accept it.

Alaba Comparison

The Arsenal loaned-out star is a fan of his compatriot Cancelo, but he feels his well-rounded style is more similar to David Alaba’s. He also commented on Lazio president Claudio Lotito’s statement, as the latter insisted he wouldn’t sell him, not even for €70 million.

Cancelo is a pleasure to watch, but Alaba is a more complete player, so I feel I’m more similar to him, as he defends and attacks well. I heard the president’s statement, I feel appreciated as they already asked me this summer. I always think I can give more, I think I can outdo myself.
