The Background

Lazio Tracking Anton Gaaei

In the meantime, Lazio have been keeping tabs on the Dane for quite some time. But while the Biancocelesti’s hands were tied last summer due to a transfer ban, they’re now able to operate freely on the market once more in January.

According to Danish portal Tipsbladet, Lazio are serious about signing Gaaei, having recently made contact with the player’s entourage. However, the source reveals competition from Paris FC, a rising powerhouse in French football backed by the Arnault family and the Red Bull group.

Why Lazio Need a New Right-Back

The Aquile will likely need a new right-back next summer, as their three current options are all on the wrong side of 30. Adam Marusic remains Maurizio Sarri’s undisputed first choice of the role, but the management hasn’t been able to reach an agreement with the Montenegrin veteran on a new contract, which could see the latter leave the club on a free transfer next summer.

Gaaei More Likely to Join Lazio in the Summer

But while Lazio’s interest in Gaaei has been confirmed by several sources in Italy and beyond, bolstering the right-back role is not considered a priority in January, as Sarri has more urgent needs, especially in midfield and attack. Therefore, the Danish full-back’s arrival would be more plausible in the summer.
