Lazio star Matteo Guendouzi was one of the best players on the pitch against Bodo/Glimt, but he ended up making a scene after the match.
The Biancocelesti lost the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final in Norway by two goals to nil, but they managed to turn the result upside in front of their home supporters at the Stadio Olimpico thanks to Taty Castellanos’ opener, Tijjani Nolsin’s late equaliser in normal time, and Boulaye Dia’s header in extra time.
Nevertheless, the Norwegian champions equalized the score on aggregate in the 109th minute through Andreas Helmersen, sending the clash to penalty shootouts.
While Guendouzi and Dia kept their composure to score from the spot, Loum Tchaouna saw his tame effort denied, while Noslin couldn’t even hit the target. Finally, Castellanos wasted the fifth and decisive spot, signalling the end of Lazio’s European campaign.
According to Sky Sport Italia (via Il Corriere dello Sport), Guendouzi was the protagonist of a controversial post-match episode. The Frenchman was seemingly irritated with his teammates who failed to convert their penalty kicks, so he was caught shouting: “We must show our b***s”.
Moreover, the midfielder had a heated altercation with the club’s assistant manager, Fabrizio Del Rosso, while leaving the field, as Marco Baroni had to intervene to put an end to the spat. Nevertheless, club captain Mattia Zaccagni tried to play down the whole episode in his post-match interview with Sky Sport Italia (via La Lazio Siamo Noi).
He wasn’t referring to this (penalty takers). It’s logical that everyone expresses anger in their own way, we need to be clear-headed about this too. Let’s regroup because now we need to focus on the league.
