Lazio will be looking to invest in Italian players under the age of 23 to take advantage of a new regulation implemented by the FIGC.
According to the new rules, Italian clubs must maintain an expense-to-cost ratio below 70%, in compliance with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play Rules. The Serie A sides failed in their attempts to delay the application of this new rule and keep the ratio at 80%.
However, the good news is that the amortization costs of U23 Italians will be exempted from the accounts, in an initiative to encourage clubs to sign local players. Therefore, young Italians will soon become a hot commodity.
According to Il Messaggero, Lazio will be looking to seize the opportunity and lure exciting young talent. After all, the club has been planning for a busy January transfer session, having failed to sign any player in the summer due to the infamous ban. The source names five youngsters who are on Angelo Fabiani’s shortlist.
The first name on the list is certainly the most prominent, as Giovanni Fabbian is already a well-established Serie A player. However, Bologna are unlikely to part ways with the 22-year-old attacking midfielder in the middle of the campaign.
Tommaso Berti represents a lesser-known alternative to Fabbian. The 21-year-old has been playing a key role in Cesena’s push for Serie A promotion, and has also been making waves with Italy U21. Maurizio Sarri is reportedly a fan of the young attacking midfielder.
The third name mentioned by the report is Lorenzo Amatucci, a 21-year-old deep-lying playmaker who rose through the ranks of Fiorentina, and is currently on loan at Las Palmas. The LaLiga2 side has the option to buy the Arezzo native at the end of the season, but Viola also possess a buy-back option.
In terms of defenders, Gabriele Guarino has been on Lazio’s radar for quite some time now. The 21-year-old centre-back is currently a regular starter at Empoli, making 11 Serie B appearances thus far this season, and scoring a goal in the process.
Finally, the Aquile are still monitoring the development of Romano Floriani Mussolini, a right wing-back who rose through their ranks, but joined Cremonese on loan last summer. The Lombardians have the option to buy the 22-year-old at the end of the season, so Lazio might have to negotiate a new deal if they wish to bring him back.
