Lazio will be without Danilo Cataldi for at least several weeks after suffering a calf injury in Sunday’s win over Lecce.
The 31-year-old was in visible pain in the final stages of the first half. He then gritted his teeth until the interval before leaving his place on the pitch for Matias Vecino. After the contest, Maurizio Sarri offered some reassuring updates on the midfielder’s condition, as well as Mario Gila’s, based on the initial tests conducted in the locker room.
However, the clinical tests revealed that the player’s condition is more serious than initially expected. The official Lazio website released a statement confirming that the club’s youth product has suffered a low-grade muscle injury.
The SS Lazio medical staff announces that Danilo Cataldi has suffered a low-grade injury to his right gastrocnemius. The player has already started the recovery protocol and will be reevaluated in the next few days.
While the official note didn’t offer a timetable for the recovery, several sources, including Il Messaggero, believe Cataldi could be out between 20 and 30 days. This is certainly an untimely blow for Maurizio Sarri, who has been exclusively relying on the Roman in the Regista role in the absence of Nicolo Rovella.

With his two main deep-lying playmakers potentially ruled out of action until the new year, the experienced Vecino will have to fill this role, playing between Toma Basic and Matteo Guendouzi.
Moreover, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru could be reinstated in the Serie A squad to add some depth to the midfield department, but this could be a temporary solution, as the 24-year-old is expected to be called up by Nigeria for the African Cup of Nations in the coming weeks.
