Lazio’s response to losing a Court of Arbitration for Sport case over the unfair termination of former player Maja Gothberg, who was pregnant, has further inflamed supporters.
The club said in a statement that the dispute was exceptional, shaped by unique circumstances, including Gothberg revealing her pregnancy before the season, prior to joining, and before a contract was formally executed. It added that CAS found no bad faith, applied no additional sporting sanctions under FIFA rules, and that all communication went through the player’s representative. It noted there was no direct contact and that the player could have sought clarification before starting formal proceedings.
Gothberg had agreed a new deal in 2024 and was ready to sign when she informed Lazio of her pregnancy, but the paperwork was never registered. She did not travel for pre-season because of nausea. Lazio argued that meant she had withdrawn from the proposal and that it was not binding.
CAS ruled today that Lazio Women must pay more than €69,000 in compensation. The decision has been described as a landmark, the first of its kind in women’s football.
Many fans replied on social media that the club had learned nothing and was still trying to deny wrongdoing, calling the statement embarrassing. Ultras who have long protested president Claudio Lotito and are boycotting home games at the Stadio Olimpico saw it as further evidence of his difficulties running the club.
