After losing all hope of securing European football through Serie A, the Coppa Italia represents the last resort for Lazio to rescue what has been a woeful campaign, and they now prepare to host Atalanta in the first leg of the semi-final.
The Coppa Italia clash between Lazio and Atalanta kicks off at 21:00 local time on Wednesday, March 4, at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Lazio reached the tournament’s semi-final by eliminating last season’s two finalists. The beat AC Milan in the Round of 16 at home thanks to Mattia Zaccagni’s solitary goal. In the quarter-finals, they salvaged a 1-1 draw against Bologna at the Renato Dall’Ara before dethroning the title holders on penalty shootouts.
However, the Biancocelesti will arrive at their most important contest of the season on the back of their most miserable Serie A run, as they failed to register a victory in their last four attempts. After thwarting a two-goal lead against Juventus and settling for a draw, they were beaten by none other than Atalanta at home.
This was followed by a stalemate in Cagliari and a woeful away defeat to Torino, which saw them sink to the bottom half of the table (11th with 34 points from 27 rounds).
The Orobici have cemented themselves as a true force to be reckoned with in the Coppa Italia. They pummelled Genoa by four unanswered goals in the Round of 16, before beating Juventus 3-0 in the previous round.
More importantly, Atalanta is the last flag bearer for Italian football in the Champions League, after pulling off a remarkable come-from-behind victory against Borussia Dortmund in the play-off round.
Raffaele Palladino’s men have also been enjoying a solid run in Serie A. They followed up on their victory over Lazio with a 2-1 win over Napoli at home. However, their European efforts may have cost them last weekend, as they suffered a 1-2 defeat to 10-man Sassuolo, leaving them 7th in the table.
Lazio (4-3-3): Provedel; Marusic, Gila, Romagnoli, Tavares; Dele-Bashiru, Cataldi, Taylor; Isaksen, Noslin, Zaccagni.
Atalanta (3-4-2-1): Carnesecchi; Scalvini, Hien, Kolasinac; Zappacosta, De Roon, Pasalic, Bernasconi; Samardzic, Zalewski; Scamacca
Following the defeat to Torino, Maurizio Sarri didn’t seem to be concerned by the lack of goals, but instead emphasized the importance of restoring their defensive solidity. With Mario Gila potentially back, this could be a boost for the backline.
On the other hand, Atalanta appeared to be mentally and physically exhausted on Sunday, so they might be willing to play out a stalemate away from home and preserve their best efforts for the return fixture in Bergamo, which will be played next month.
