Le Mans FC’s Ligue 1 promotion has been put on hold following the abandonment of their away game to Bastia on Ligue 2’s final day. Le Mans needed an away win in Corsica to confirm their second place, and they duly delivered.
They raced ahead courtesy of Erwan Colas’ header in the first half In injury time. Milan Robin doubled his side’s lead deep in injury time. Unfortunately, the game was then suspended after Bastia fans had thrown flares and smoke bombs on the pitch.
Despite Le Mans’ 2-0 lead over the Ligue 3-bound Corsicans, their win was not certified following the game’s abandonment. However, Bastia are expected to be handed a 3-0 default loss in the coming days.
This would confirm Le Mans’ return in the big time for the first time since 2010. The promoted Ligue 2 side has defied the odds in securing another promotion. Le Mans have had a stellar season in Ligue 2. They only lost four times this season in the league. Even Ligue 2 champions Troyes could not boast such a record.
Le Mans have been purchased by Outfield; a Brazilian fund which also boasts start athletes likes Novak Djokovic, Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen as shareholders. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has also invested in Le Mans FC through NxtPlay, his investment consortium.
Thirteen years after going through liquidation, Le Mans are going back in French football’s first-tier.
