Rafael Leao believes that the change in formation has made AC Milan more compact as he inspired a comeback win over Genoa.
When the team news came out around one hour before kick-off, it was surprising to learn that Leao was initially on the bench. His form away from home this season has been very positive, but Sergio Conceicao opted to start Ruben Loftus-Cheek instead.
In the end, the Portuguese winger would enter the field in the first half because of Youssouf Fofana’s injury. He burst into life after Milan went a goal down, scoring the equalising goal and then providing the teasing cut-back that forced an own-goal and completed the rapid turnaround.
Leao spoke to DAZN after the full-time whistle to assess what was another hard-fought win for the team, one that boosts confidence even if not the chances of getting a European spot in the league. MilanNews relayed his comments.
How important is that win?
“These last matches are fundamental to get as many points as possible. The coach has changed the formation and we are more compact. Everyone works for the good of the team. Today those who came on made the difference.”
Are you already thinking about the final?
“I try to help my team every game, both as a starter and as a bench player. We are always on the ball, we always try to give our best in every game. Our goal is to do our best in these last games.”
