According to The Chronicle, Lee Cattermole, 38, is in discussions to become Gateshead’s next head coach and has emerged as the frontrunner for the vacancy.
Gateshead are seeking a replacement after Rob Elliot left for Carlisle United late last month. Elliot had overseen a late-season escape from relegation in 2025/26, and said he departed due to budget issues and a lack of access to immediate infrastructure.
Cattermole spoke to Gateshead last summer and, while he was not appointed, he impressed the hierarchy during the process. Talks have now been revisited.
The former Stadium of Light favourite is said to have been waiting for the right chance to take his first senior management role. He was recently linked with Hartlepool United, who instead chose ex-Sunderland man Lee Clark.
His coaching background includes work in Middlesbrough’s academy and a short stint at Bristol Rovers, where a backroom position led to a brief caretaker spell after Matt Taylor’s sacking.
