The Chronicle reports that Lee Cattermole is in talks to become Gateshead’s next head coach and is said to be the frontrunner.
The National League club are seeking a replacement after Rob Elliot left to join Carlisle United late last month.
Before departing, Elliot steered Gateshead clear of relegation during the run-in to the 2025/26 campaign. He later cited disagreements over budget and restricted access to immediate infrastructure as reasons for moving on.
Cattermole, 38, reportedly held discussions with Gateshead last summer and, although he missed out, is understood to have impressed the hierarchy.
The former Sunderland favourite is understood to have been waiting for the right opportunity to make his first move into senior management. He was recently linked with Hartlepool United, who instead appointed Lee Clark.
His coaching background includes work in Middlesbrough’s academy and a brief spell at Bristol Rovers, where he moved from backroom duties to a short caretaker role after Matt Taylor’s sacking.
