Huddersfield Town have lost their last three matches in all competitions, and pressure is beginning to mount on Terriers boss Grant
Huddersfield Town's slump in form continued on Thursday night with a 2-1 defeat at home to Bolton Wanderers - with both of the visitors' goals coming in second half stoppage time.
After making a strong start to the 2025/26 League One campaign, the Terriers' form has somewhat halted in recent weeks.
Lee Grant’s side were tipped as one of the favourites to achieve promotion before the season started, after an impressive summer of recruitment which saw them recruit the likes of Alfie May, Ryan Ledson and Lynden Gooch.
Huddersfield lived up to that hype in the early stages of the campaign, winning four of their first five third tier matches.
However, that form has taken a dip. A defeat against Harrogate Town in the EFL Trophy was followed by a further loss at home against Stockport County.
The Terriers looked to have bounced back on Thursday after taking the lead over Bolton Wanderers in the seventh minute through Leo Castledine.
However, goals in the 93rd and 95th minutes via Sam Dalby and Amario Cozier-Duberry saw the Trotters take all three points in dramatic fashion, which meant that Town had won just one of their last five league matches.
Naturally, a loss in this fashion was a heavy blow for all those involved with Huddersfield Town to take, including Grant and the players.
The Terriers were desperately close to claiming a much-needed three points, which would’ve seen them shoot up into the play-off places.
That wasn’t the case and now the Yorkshire outfit have slipped behind Bolton in the standings.
When speaking to HTTV after the match, Grant opened up on his thoughts about how the contest ended.
“About as tough an end to a game as you can get,” stated Huddersfield’s manager.
“About as sore as we can feel. About as angry, and disappointed, and upset as we can feel. The emotion in the Stadium, the emotion on the pitch, and the emotion on the side, I think we are all shared in that emotion.
“When you lose a game in that fashion it really hurts. It stings. You can’t hide from that.
"There will be a sense for all of us that the second half performance leads to where we end up in the game, and that’s a real disappointment, because in the first half we didn’t show any signs of that, and the second half we stray away from the things we hold dear, our values, and the things that served us really well in the first half.
“We are punished in the worst way for it. Do I feel like the group were trying? Yes, I do.
“They were trying to win that game so badly that perhaps it affected the mentality and how we went about that second half. Therein lies the lesson for us as a group.”
Grant was appointed as Huddersfield Town manager this summer, in what is his first full-time role as a first-team boss in professional football.
The 42-year-old was previously assistant to Kieran McKenna at Ipswich Town, during a period where the Tractor Boys enjoyed successive promotions from League One to the top flight, but he isn't finding being the leading man easy whatsoever.
Given how Huddersfield Town’s recent matches have gone, it’s only natural for supporters to start asking questions of their manager, especially after he has made a few contentious decisions.
One Terriers supporter noted that the squad needed to provide a reaction to the previous defeat at home to 10-man Stockport, but Grant's "tactical naivety" cost them all three points once more.
Another one of the Huddersfield faithful made reference to prior defeats against Blackpool, Bradford City and Stockport County whilst also reiterating the fact that May should be deployed in his natural position.
“Lee, Blackpool was painful,” stated the supporter. “Bradford was very painful, Stockport was painful, tonight was painful..... something needs to change. Please play people in position.”
There were calls for owner Kevin Nagle to take action regarding Grant’s position as manager, clearly unimpressed with what they have seen thus far.
“@KevinNagleMLS this can’t be what you want,” said one Huddersfield fan. “You’ve backed him to the hilt and he’s taking no responsibility for the way his team is set up. It’s timid, risk averse football that got what it deserved tonight. This guy will just continue spinning you lines.”
Overall, the Terriers’ faithful just want to see their side consistently win games, which seems to be the overriding message following their Bolton defeat.
“For the last 7 years me and my lad have been walking out of our ground listening to the away fans celebrating,” revealed another supporter.” Beyond demoralising for everyone at Town. Appreciate what @KevinNagleMLS is trying to do but results on the field need to change.”
Grant may just be a few months into his first managerial job, but results seemingly haven't been good enough for the size of a club that Huddersfield are and for the squad they have on paper, things need to improve drastically in order to keep the fanbase onside.
