Leeds United are closing in on Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Michael Zetterer, according to The Athletic.
Leeds have already secured a club-record deal for James Trafford, so Zetterer is expected to come in as an understudy to the England international.
That move would also force the Peacocks to make a decision on Lucas Perri’s future, although the experienced keeper could be on his way out of Elland Road this summer.
Leeds signed Perri from Ligue 1 giants Olympique Lyon last summer, and he came in as their first-choice goalkeeper.
However, Trafford’s arrival automatically pushes the Brazilian down the pecking order, although he’s not short on potential suitors with clubs across Europe showing interest.
While Leeds are closing in on a move for Zetterer, they can’t complete the deal until Frankfurt sign a replacement.
He only joined the German club last August, but his performances during his first season quickly showed why he could be valuable to Leeds.
Zetterer made 22 Bundesliga appearances for Frankfurt and kept six clean sheets. He also started five Champions League matches, so he’ll bring valuable European football experience to Leeds.
Earlier in his career at Werder Bremen, serious hand and wrist injuries kept him out for almost two years.
He eventually rebuilt his career through loan spells abroad before returning to Germany and establishing himself as Werder’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Zetterer initially joined Frankfurt as a deputy to highly rated Brazilian goalkeeper Kaua Santos.
However, after Santos struggled for confidence, Zetterer stepped into the starting role and provided the stability his team needed.
While he is not the tallest or most imposing goalkeeper, Zetterer is comfortable with the ball at his feet, reacts quickly and is confident coming off his line.
Leeds currently have Alex Cairns as their other senior goalkeeper after Karl Darlow joined Manchester United and Illan Meslier moved to Arsenal as free agents.
Zetterer, who has also played in the Netherlands and represented Germany at under-20 and under-21 level, would bring more than goalkeeping ability.
He is regarded as a strong personality and a respected dressing-room presence.
