Leeds United supporters have been criticised after jeers during a Ramadan fast break in the Manchester City match at Elland Road, Sunderland Echo reports.

Referee Peter Bankes halted play in the 11th minute for some City players to break their fast, with the reason shown on the big screen. As the message appeared, sections of the home crowd reacted, then the game continued and City won 1-0 through a 47th-minute goal by Antoine Semenyo.

Pep Guardiola said people should respect religion and diversity, and noted the Premier League permits a short stoppage so fasting players can eat and drink.

Anti-discrimination group Kick It Out described the reaction as massively disappointing, pointing out that such pauses have been standard for several years. It said the protocol helps make football welcoming for Muslim players and communities, and that the response showed education and acceptance still have progress to make.

Leeds declined to comment, but assistant Eddie Riemer, standing in after Daniel Farke’s late red card, said he focused on the game and was disappointed with some supporters if it happened. He added they would try to learn from it.

The Football Association has been approached for comment.
