Andrew Hughes has been appointed set-piece coach at Athletic Club, linking up with new head coach Edin Terzic.
The club said in a statement that the Englishman will be their set-piece specialist and will join next Monday, having recently worked in the same capacity with Scotland at the World Cup. It added that the Manchester-born coach has served on staffs at Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers.
Hughes was a crowd favourite at Elland Road between 2007 and 2010, making 139 appearances across all competitions. He featured in Simon Grayson’s 2009/10 League One promotion-winning side. After retiring in 2015, he worked across the EFL, then joined Steve Clarke’s Scotland staff for the World Cup.
Athletic previously employed Marcelo Bielsa, who enhanced his European reputation during two seasons in Bilbao. His side won 3-2 at Manchester United in a Europa League last-32 first leg, then 2-1 at home to eliminate Sir Alex Ferguson’s team.
Athletic endured a difficult 2025/26, finishing 12th in a tight La Liga table. They were six places above relegated Mallorca, with only three points separating the sides.
