Former Leeds United fan favourite Andrew Hughes has been appointed set-piece coach at La Liga side Athletic Club.

The club said in a statement that he will join the team next Monday after fulfilling the same role with Scotland at the World Cup, adding that the Manchester native has worked on the coaching staffs at Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers.

Hughes spent three seasons at Elland Road between 2007 and 2010, making 139 appearances across all competitions and helping Simon Grayson’s side win League One promotion in 2009/10. He retired in 2015, then held several EFL coaching roles, most recently at Leicester City, before a short stint with Steve Clarke’s Scotland staff for the World Cup.

Earlier this month Athletic appointed Edin Terzic as head coach, with the 43-year-old including Hughes on his backroom team as set-piece specialist.

Marcelo Bielsa made his European mark during two years with Athletic, notably winning 3-2 at Manchester United in a Europa League last-32 first leg before a 2-1 home victory to eliminate Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

Athletic finished 12th in 2025/26 in a congested La Liga table, six places above relegated Mallorca yet only three points clear of them.
