Leeds United’s contentious second goal at Chelsea has been judged correct to stand, despite the ball striking Jayden Bogle’s arm in the build-up.
Daniel Farke’s side came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Stamford Bridge, ending a run of seven straight defeats there and edging one point closer to safety. According to Leeds Live, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher said the officials were right to allow the goal, a view echoed by the Premier League match centre’s VAR check on X.
Bogle inadvertently brushed the ball with his wrist before driving forward, then, after challenges involving Moises Caicedo and Josh Acheampong and a prod from Lukas Nmecha, Noah Okafor rolled into an empty net.
Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior was incensed, arguing it should have been disallowed on the pitch or by VAR. He felt the handball affected his players, who switched off, and said his team then faced wave after wave of pressure before settling.
Gallagher maintained the contact was accidental and did not directly lead to a goal, noting three Chelsea touches occurred in between, so the incident did not meet the handball criteria.
Farke hailed a great night for the club, lauding spirit and a never-say-die attitude. He highlighted the fightback against opponents in red-hot form and did so without Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Pascal Struijk and Anton Stach, while some players were making first starts after injury.
