Leeds United have stepped up their move for Shea Charles, with an improved offer submitted and negotiations ongoing, according to the Daily Mail.
An opening bid of around £20m last month was not accepted by Southampton, but talks continued amid interest from Premier League rivals Crystal Palace.
The latest proposal is an initial £23m plus add-ons. Southampton value Charles at £30m, and Leeds hope the extras can help bridge the gap. No exact add-on figure has been disclosed, but it implies under £7m.
Southampton’s stance is influenced by clauses from Manchester City’s 2023 sale. Charles cost £15m including bonuses, City hold a 15 per cent sell-on and retain buyback rights to match any accepted bid.
It is unclear whether the 15 per cent applies to the full fee or only profit on the £15m outlay. Either way, a significant portion of any accepted bid would be forwarded by St Mary’s chiefs.
The escalation underlines Leeds’ intent as Daniel Farke seeks midfield reinforcements. Aged 22, the Northern Ireland international has extensive experience, with three years at Southampton yielding 106 Championship appearances, 43 of them on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.
