Mykhailo Mudryk is set to leave Chelsea before tonight’s transfer deadline, with a loan move actively being discussed, according to Fabrizio Romano. Leeds United have been the most persistent suitors over the past few days, insisting on the deal even as Chelsea continue to explore other options.
There could yet be surprises depending on how the final hours play out, Romano notes, but one thing is clear: Mudryk himself wants to stay in the Premier League. He has no interest in dropping to Ligue 1 with Strasbourg, which is Chelsea’s preferred destination. At 25, the Ukrainian winger has reintegrated under head coach Xabi Alonso after his anti-doping suspension was lifted in the summer of 2026, appearing in a pre-season friendly against Juventus. A decision is expected before midnight.
Daniel Farke’s side are in the market for a direct replacement for Wilfried Gnonto, who is closing in on a switch to Fiorentina. That vacancy on the left wing is precisely what makes Mudryk an attractive option for Elland Road. He has the pace, the ability to carry the ball directly at defenders, and a clear preference for cutting inside from the left onto his right foot, which fits what Farke asks of his wide players in that 4-2-3-1 shape.
With Dominic Calvert-Lewin holding up the ball and Brenden Aaronson operating in the half-spaces, Mudryk’s vertical threat could cause genuine problems for Premier League defences. The setup offers him plenty of 1v1 situations out wide, with the left-back covering the space in behind.

The issues are not small ones. Mudryk hasn’t played a competitive match the entire 2025/26 season. That’s not a minor gap in rhythm; that’s close to two full years of lost development at the highest level, and those are years that simply cannot be reclaimed. His instincts are sharp enough, and the pre-season clips look encouraging, but football intelligence isn’t something you maintain purely through training sessions.
Farke demands pressing discipline and defensive tracking from his wide men, with Ethan Ampadu and Anton Stach needing protection through a high-intensity midfield structure. Historically, Mudryk’s defensive awareness has been poor. That doesn’t improve with ring rust on top of it. Leeds have started their Premier League campaign with real momentum, and Farke won’t want to risk that by throwing an undercooked player into a high-pressure starting role from day one.
He is at his absolute ceiling as a player coming off the bench in short bursts while he claws back match fitness. If Mudryk accepts that, the move can work. If he expects starts immediately, this gets messy quickly. Chelsea’s bloated wide options mean there is no path to minutes at Stamford Bridge regardless. So a loan isn’t just sensible; it’s his only real option to keep his career from quietly stalling out. Whether it’s Leeds United who gets him before midnight tonight is still genuinely open.
