Leeds United have confirmed preparatory work for Elland Road’s redevelopment will affect the stadium’s mural.
The club said in a statement that work on a new security hub will begin from Wednesday March 25, and Nicolas Dixon has been recommissioned to repaint the artwork in a new location, with thanks to the Leeds United Supporters’ Trust.
Planning permission for a new West Stand was granted in January, and changes at the north east corner of the ground mean the existing mural cannot stay.
The piece marks the 1972 FA Cup triumph, featuring manager Don Revie, trainer and coach Les Cocker and a number of iconic players. It was hand-painted in 2022 by Leeds artist Dixon for the 50-year anniversary, using original portraits by Paul Trevillion and commissioned by the Supporters’ Trust.
The wall currently bearing the artwork will house the club’s new security hub and the present hub will be demolished. The requirement for outward kiosk windows rules out keeping the mural in situ.
