Leeds United were told why no penalty was awarded for Max Kilman’s challenge on Anton Stach in the FA Cup quarter-final at West Ham United. On TNT Sports’ coverage it was explained that VAR Constantine Hatzidakis viewed the contact as a coming together after Stach had already taken his shot.
Stach got his effort away, which Alphonse Areola saved, before Kilman slid in late and collided with the Leeds midfielder. Stach received treatment and was replaced by Brenden Aaronson six minutes before half-time. Leeds were already ahead through Ao Tanaka’s deflected strike on 26 minutes, which bounced off the bar and over the line at the London Stadium.
The visitors led at the interval, with home supporters booing their team after a poor first half. After the restart a VAR review for serious foul play followed Ethan Ampadu’s cynical foul on Adama Traore, but Hatzidakis declined to upgrade referee Craig Pawson’s yellow card to a red.
Kilman later conceded a spot-kick after VAR ruled a careless foul on Aaronson. Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted to put Daniel Farke’s side 2-0 up.
Pundits felt a penalty for the earlier Stach incident was unlikely once the shot had been taken. They noted there was significant contact but argued Kilman could not halt his momentum.
