Ditmir Hodja, the North Macedonian striker, is poised to join Leeds United, with the 18-year-old earmarked for the academy rather than the first team. He is viewed as one for the future with a role in the Under-21s.

According to Leeds Live, the six foot four forward would offer coach Scott Gardner a different profile to those currently available. Leeds continue to seek a senior back-up striker before the window shuts a week on Tuesday.

Hodja is set to arrive as a free agent after his deal at Rabotnicki Skopje expired, having scored three times in 19 league matches. He featured for 55 minutes in a Europa Conference League qualifier, a 1-0 defeat to Belarussian club Torpedo Zhadino 13 months ago. He is yet to make his senior international debut.

The teenager ended last season with three goals and an assist across his final five league games. Joel Piroe’s loan to West Ham United leaves Daniel Farke with only Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha up front.

Farke said on Thursday he is “carefully optimistic” of adding more signings before the window closes, having stated last weekend that the squad needs “more additions”. Leeds are confident of landing Eintracht Frankfurt’s Michael Zetterer as a back-up goalkeeper, though a representative of the player denied an agreement in principle was close. Leeds sources remain firm that a deal can be struck. Cover at left-back and a left winger also remain on the wishlist.
