FLW's Leeds United Fan Pundit has warned Leeds from moving for Sheffield United midfielder Gustavo Hamer, amid links to the club.
This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Leeds United and Sheffield United were at one point locked in battle for the Championship title with just a month of the season to go, but they will instead be in different divisions next season and the Whites have been linked with a move for Blades’ star man Gustavo Hamer.
Leeds eventually claimed the second-tier title on the final day of the season with a last-gasp win at Home Park against Plymouth Argyle, whilst Sheffield United collapsed towards the back end of the campaign and had to settle for the play-offs.
It appeared as though that wouldn’t matter, though, and that the Blades would be joining their Yorkshire rivals in the top-flight next season when they led Sunderland by a goal to nil in what appeared a dominant and confident performance in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium.
That was until the Black Cats turned the game on its head with a strike from Eliezer Mayenda, before Brighton and Hove Albion-bound Tommy Watson snatched glory for Sunderland in stoppage-time.
With Sheffield United now concerned about keeping hold of their brightest talents, Leeds are the latest side to be linked with Hamer once again as per Talksport, but our Leeds-supporting FLW gan pundit Joe Blackburn has warned against that move.
Hamer moved to Bramall Lane in the summer of 2023, following their promotion to the Premier League, for a fee believed to be in the region of £15 million from Coventry City.
He has been linked with several clubs already for this summer’s transfer window with Everton reportedly rivalling Leeds in the hunt for the Brazil-born former Netherlands youth international.
However, FLW’s Leeds fan pundit Joe Blackburn has a few concerns about Hamer and believes that the club should steer clear of a move for Sheffield United’s key man this summer.
Joe said to FLW: “Personally for me, I think Leeds should firmly stay away from Gus Hamer. That is a big no thanks from me.
“The big concern around Gus Hamer is the fact that he has some fairly clear fitness issues.
"Whether that is just his stamina or his match fitness, anything in terms of those regards or it’s actual issues with muscles and joints, it’s very rare you can get a full 90 from Gus Hamer, which is only going to hurt you in the Premier League.
“I think in reality, we’re going to have to be looking at potentially a higher level number ten. Whether that is someone from abroad or someone younger from a top six team, like a McAtee or potentially someone at a Premier League club that isn’t getting minutes right now.
“For me, Hamer doesn’t fit the way that Daniel Farke wants Leeds United to play and I think he would be more detrimental than he would be an advantage to Leeds United.”
Immediately following their promotion to the Premier League being confirmed, it became clear that Leeds were set for a busy summer with rumours that Daniel Farke could still be sacked eventually put to bed by chairman Paraag Marathe.
They were also hit with links that West Ham United were interested in Ethan Ampadu and Mateo Joseph, with the latter also the subject of renewed interest from UEFA Europa Conference League finalists Real Betis.
There have been rumours aplenty in terms of incomings, too, with the likes of Orlando Gil, Leonardo Balerdi, Hidemasa Morita and Sean Longstaff among an array of names suggested as potential targets for the club.
